As with any field, there are good technical training schools, and bad ones. When you sign up with one of these schools, you’ve made a significant investment in time and money. You deserve to know everything about the school and your job prospects after leaving that school before you put down your hard-earned money. The problem is, sometimes it’s hard to know the right questions to ask.

When I was a pharmaceutical drug sales representative, I remember that one of the doctors I called on had asked me how much money drug representatives make. When I told him the different salary ranges, he was very surprised, especially with what the high performers can make in this field.

The fact is that overall incomes of pharmaceutical drug sales representatives can come from a few different sources including base salary, sales bonuses and other benefits.

Base Salary

The main component of income for a drug representative of course is the base salary. The starting salary for recent university or college graduates with no prior experience in sales could be in the mid $30,000s to $40,000s range. Those with a few years of related work experience could negotiate to the higher end of this range.

Base salaries typically increase quite well with years of service to a pharmaceutical company. After several years, the base salary of a drug sales representative could be in the $50,000s to $70,000s range. Promotions to specialist hospital pharmaceutical sales positions will often result in an even higher range.

In today’s world, data and electronic communications are critical to small business success. If your data was to disappear, what would that do to your business? What would a series of data losses cost your business? What great ideas would be gone, never to come back?

There is no secret that certain jobs and career fields are paying their employees more money, which has become one of the main motivating factors for applying for particular job titles, fields, and duties. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics National Compensation, white-collar earners are paid on the average a little more than $20 per hour, while blue-collar workers receive an average of $15 per hour. The occupational group that is paid by the hour usually receives an average pay of about $10 per hour.

When it comes to landing the jobs that offer the most pay, education is key in making the grade in the high-paying work world. For some companies, at least a four-year college degree is required from their job applicants. In the United States, there are certain job fields that have consistently presented the most appealing salary packages over the years. Leading the way in high-paying job listings are positions in the medical, judicial, and technology fields.

Overall Top-Paying Jobs

When achieving an advanced degree, many doors will open up with numerous passageways leading towards a wealth of competitive top-paying jobs. After all the years of medical school have been completed, doctors and surgeons will make an average of $147,000 per year. As for dentists, they linger around an average pay of $90,000. Looking for a career in pharmacy? Average pay includes a yearly salary of $85,500.

While police officers scour the streets in search for the individuals who lead to the bread and butter of the judicial system, lawyers and judges receive an average yearly pay of $99,800. If you’ve trained to fly the friendly skies and are good at what you do, you may earn an average salary of $133,500 as an aircraft pilot. Managing a company is also a rather profitable job with average yearly pay totaling $116,000 for some chief executives.

Consulting salaries are very closely related to the hourly billing rates that you charge and the salaried equivalents that you can afford to pay both yourself and others down the road. The consulting salary you expect must be affordable given your hourly billing rates. This consulting salary must also be enough to attract sales and technical staff as your business scales up. If you don’t set your rates at an appropriate level then you won’t be able to offer competitive salaries to future employees and your business growth will falter.

The Consulting Salary Equivalent of $75 an hour

$75 per hour sounds like an attractive rate. Most people will equate it with a yearly consulting salary close to $150,000. The assumptions are that there is little overhead and people with their own businesses hardly pay any taxes.

Unfortunately, figuring out a consulting salary is not that simple. You need to remember that you’ll only be able to bill out about 75% of your week. This takes you from a starting place of a $150k consulting salary to $112k per year. That still doesn’t sound bad though, right?

After you have received the job offer you might feel that the package needs improving in order for you to accept the position.

So what could you do to improve the situation?

Wherever possible, don’t try to negotiate immediately after an offer. Make sure you ask for the offer to be put in writing and then try to delay any negotiations for the longest possible time.

When you’ve got the job offer in writing you can respond by acknowledging receipt of the offer and making it clear that you will confirm your acceptance within (say) 7 days. This could be longer if necessary but better to let them know if you are going on holiday for instance.

Now you have gained yourself some time, use it constructively to investigate the average salary of people in similar positions.

You could even contact other companies in your area if they are advertising similar vacancies. Use the internet – a search will quickly throw up various websites and salary calculators you can use.
