Firstly, be prepared for them to tell you that your work is rubbish. They’ll tell you that your site design is shocking, and that your sales copy is lousy. They’ll shake their head in wonder at your stupidity if you don’t have an email capture system.
It won’t feel nice, but do not take it personally, do not get too overprotective of your work. Once it starts making you the money you intend, *then* you can get overprotective!
The second thing you should be prepared for, is to follow what the consultant tells you. That may sound blindingly obvious, but in fact the biggest problem that a consultant has in any field, is trying to get the client to do something when the client thinks they know best. With internet marketing, if you look to someone else for advice and the advice feels alien to you, or wrong, you must be prepared to go with it. Do not think that you know best. You don’t, and this is evidenced by the simple fact that you asked someone else for help!
The third thing to be prepared to do, is to thoroughly check out anyone’s credentials. As soon as a consultant gets a bit shirty about you wanting to check them out, you must say ‘thanks, but no thanks’ and move on.
There are plenty of people out there who know less than you do, trying to pass themselves as consultants. In this situation you *do* know best, and any decent consultant will be more than happy, glad in fact, to show you their credentials. Maybe they have results they can show you, testimonials from previous customers. At the very least, email the first and see if you get a reply. If you don’t, you need to think very seriously before giving them your money.
