While reviewing chapter 2 of the online class and watching Oprah and Eckhart Tolle, author of A New Earth, answer a skyper from Ireland inquiring as to how she might introduce being fully present to her small children; I had an ah-ha moment that called to remembrance a previous discovery of mine.
Eckhart wisely recognized the unfortunate fate of us all growing up is that “we become lost in a world of conceptualization”.
It’s what I call spiritual paralysis by reason of excessive mental analysis, which hinders us from being fully present and prevents us from thoroughly enjoying the moment. Sadly a mental fixation with concepts and labels drowns out the experience of life. Unfortunately, we in the West have become more cerebral and less spiritual. My global travels to over 50 countries and 6 continents has shown me the vast differences in culture, mental processing, and human expression.
Africans and Latinos for example are far more lively when worshipping at church and therefore more easily enter into the spiritual experience. Caucasions and Asians conversely are more apt to first pursue mental conceptualization before relinquishing control of their mental fixation and predetermination to figure everything out before enjoying the experience.
The sad part about letting your mind rule your life is you often go through life dead within governed entirely by your mind. When your mind reigns supreme as king, your spirit within is crippled and incapable of fully connecting to the joyous experience of life.
As Oprah said to Eckhart as the two discussed an oak tree in relation to a child’s experience: “When you believe you know what it is, it loses its magic, its essence.”
Mental domination and excessive examination of everything short-circuits the spiritual life flow within and quenches the fiery divine presence that moves in spontaneous free flowing fashion.
The question we therefore must continually ask ourselves is are we being cerebral or spiritual? While being cerebral provides mental conquest, accomplishment, and appeasement of one’s prideful ego; being spiritual provides immediate enjoyment, spontaneous life, and inner fulfillment. The ideal is to happily merge the two and live from within, whereby your spirit within governs and guides the thoughts of your mind to impart life all of the time.
Don’t lose the miraculous wonder of people and things just because you gain some limited knowledge or learn a label by which to name them. Cultivate the magic by enjoying the ongoing experience and evolution of people and things, which if you do will continuously and forever impart newness of life.
